Subscription vs API: what's the difference?

2026-10-011 min read

Beginners often mix up “subscription” and “API”. They are different things:

Subscription

For regular users: you pay monthly or yearly and use the AI directly on the official website and mobile app, with usage limits. This is mainly what our shop sells.

API

For developers: lets your program, website or tool call the AI's capabilities, usually billed by usage — you pay for what you use.

Key differences

  • The billing is separate: a subscription does not give free API access, and API access does not give subscription features.
  • If you just chat and write, a subscription is enough.
  • You only need the API for development or integrating AI into your own product.
