Claude Code quick start
Claude Code is Claude's command-line coding tool for developers: start it in your project folder and use natural language to have it read code, edit files and run commands. Availability and billing depend on your subscription and current official policy.
Preparation
- A computer where you can open a terminal (macOS, Linux or Windows).
- A working Claude account (subscription type per the official description).
- A code project you want it to work on, ideally under Git.
Install and log in
Install it the way the official documentation describes (the install command is updated by the provider, so it is not hard-coded here to avoid going stale). After installing, start it in your project folder and log in with your account when prompted.
Basic use
- Enter the project folder and start Claude Code.
- Describe a task in plain language, e.g. “read this project and tell me its structure”, “add e-mail format validation to the sign-up endpoint and add tests”.
- When it wants to edit files or run commands, it asks for your confirmation. Read carefully before agreeing.
- When done, review what it changed and run the tests.
Tips
- The more specific the task, the better: goal, scope, acceptance criteria.
- Split big tasks into small steps and confirm each.
- Commit with Git first so you can roll back.
- Don't have it process files containing keys or passwords; never paste keys into the chat.
